If you are married and file married filing jointly, your TurboTax program will automatically pick up your spouse as an exemption.  Spouses are never classified as dependents even if they are disabled, children are classified as dependents.  Spouses are classified as exemptions. For 2016, you will get $4,050 for each dependent and each exemption that is listed on your income tax return.

Your TurboTax program has a Personal Info section where you will be asked a series of questions.  One of the questions is “Are you married?” .  If you answer “yes”, the program will ask you for your spouse’s information, (Name, birthdate, social security number, etc.).  If you decide that you want to file married filing jointly, the program will automatically give you a $4,050  exemption for your spouse.  You do not have to add that your wife is disabled, she will still get the $4,050 exemption.
