also, my 80 year old father in law came to live with us. he only has medicare checks. can I claim him on my taxes?

Your son being away at school is a "temporary absence" so you still say he lived with you all year. As for your father-in-law, "medicare checks?" Do you actually mean Social Security? When did he come to live with you?
