I have two children, 17 and 18 and they are not counting as dependents, what is this?

When did the rules change?
They do not work and I take care of them.

You do not get child tax credit for them, if that is what you mean.  They are over 16 so you cannot get the CTC.    You can get the $500 credit for other dependents for them.

And..depending on your income, you might get earned income credit.

But....what income have you entered?  All of the child-related credits are based on having income from working.  Have you entered income from a W-2 or self-employment income yet?

How can I get the other dependent for them? I don’t see child as an option to chose when I enter the other section…

If you have entered your children as dependents in My Info you should be seeing the Credit for other dependents on line 19 of your Form 1040.  It is a non-refundable credit that is used to reduce your tax liability.

Look at your 2023 Form 1040 to see the child-related credits you received

I really appreciate you - do you know how I can get the Other as an option?

@ryanhsteele12 Did you enter the children as dependents in My Info---did you put in their names, dates of birth, SSN's, etc.    When you look at the top part of your Form 1040 do you see them listed as dependents?

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

If all of that is good, then the credit for other dependents should be there automatically.   What do you see on line 19 of your Form 1040?   That is where you will see that credit.   It is not a refund.  It is used to reduce any tax you may owe.
