I have deleted out all expenses on my car expenses for 2018. It still shows a vehicle deduction of $4,169.00.

Why is my deduction showing as so high?

Again, for business, I have set all car expenses to zero.

Miles driven has been set all the way down to 100 miles.

How is it showing my vehicle deduction as $4,169.00?

There are 2 ways of calculating car expenses for your business:

  • Standard mileage; or
  • Actual expenses.

Two thoughts:

  • Maybe TurboTax is still calculating depreciation on the car.
  • Even though you have deleted out all the expenses, TurboTax may still be calculating a deduction based on standard mileage.

If you want to delete all information on the vehicle, please follow these steps:

  1. Click on Income and Expenses and then click the Start/Revisit box in the Self-Employment section.
  2. On the Your 2019 self-employed work summary screen, click on Edit next to your Vehicle.
  3. On the Vehicle Summary, click on the Delete icon (trashcan) to delete the vehicle from your return.
  4. Click the Edit box if you want to modify any of your entries.

Thank you!!  I believe you are right.  Two questions:

1 - Can I delete of change the depreciation on my car?

2 - If I delete the entirely, can I add it back in?

Thanks again!!!

1- You can delete the depreciation on the car.  You can't change the asset life of the car, but you can change the depreciation by changing % of business use or taking special depreciation or the 179 deduction.
2--Yes - If you delete the car entirely you can add it back in [which may be easier than trying to change your entries].
