There is no CD now. The desktop download is just what it is called----a download to your own hard drive. Your tax files are stored only on your own hard drive (or any back up device you use like a flash drive); they are not stored online with TT. The difference is that you put the software on your hard drive by downloading it instead of using a piece of plastic. Many newer computers do not have disc drives, so CD's are going to landfills with other outdated trash. The other tax software companies have also eliminated CD's and provide downloads.

When you use desktop software, there is an additional fee to e-file a state return. You can avoid that fee if you print, sign and mail the state return.
