tlapanne,  after reading all the comments and sugestions above, my recommendation would be to settle with the IRS -- explain that because of the change of jobs, time etc. you do not have the records to prove the claims -- show them what you have  and go on from  there. Throw yourself at the mercy of the IRS and hopefully you can get some kindness from the auditor. I am sorry for your situation, but there is not much you can do about it  other than accept and move on.  And yes this does mean  that  chances of future audits  of your returns  may go up a bit.  Still very few  people get audited.

As for the future,  please recognize that TurboTax , like all the other tax preparation software , does a very good job of helping you prepare your taxes but it cannot replace human  preparer. It does use all the data that you provide and fills out the forms and  transmits the  data to the tax authorities. Also note that whether you use  tax software  or a professional  to prepare your return, you still remain liable for evrything on that return -- there is no way to escape that. With that proviso, you should be fine preparing your own returns with TurboTax ( or any other tax-prep software).  Good Luck

Did you receive a notice from the IRS in the mail?  If so, what is the notice number located in the upper right of the first page, usually preceded by a CP or LTR?

tlapanne,  IRS does not "requested by the .... to investigate back taxes". Their letters are specific to a year and  bear a refernce number, contact number etc. at the top right on the first page. We need the following details before somebody here can help --- (a) the year, (b) letter number  (c) what are they challanging.  You need to make sure that this is a legitimated IRS letter

TurboTax is software.  It is not a paid tax professional such as a CPA, EA or tax attorney.  TurboTax cannot represent you before the IRS nor intercede on your behalf with the IRS.

Use the link provided to contact the Audit Support Center where they can assist you in understanding the notice you received from the IRS.  https://support.turbotax.intuit.com/irs-notice/audit-support/

The IRS is likely going to need documentation of the actual expenses, as well as proof that they were indeed job related.

Your employer shouldn't have the records, you should.  Or did you submit the expenses to your employer and your employer reimbursed you for those expenses?

some of the funds where reimbursed many were not  I do not have the records that is  my issue . Will I have to pay some money back if I can not prove this . If I want legal representation will you supply it . Again I was forced to leave the business due to lack of funding and lost my vendors and my space that was used to support the business . Again a alive body to talk to would be better

TurboTax cannot represent you before the IRS as stated in the answer above.  You can discuss the notice you received from the IRS with a support agent on Monday, during business hours, using the Audit Support Center website as also shown in the answer above.

I have been requested by the IRS to investigate back taxes I am nervous about this we use your system every year and are honest people . Who will help us with this pleas

NO! TurboTax will NOT provide legal representation, UNLESS you bought their add on service "Audit Defense".  If you did, see <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://support.turbotax.intuit.com/irs-notice/audit-support/">https://support.turbotax.intuit.com/i...>. You contact TurboTax's contractor that supplies that service.

From what you describe, you will not get any useful help from TurboTax standard support. You need professional help, if the amount is big enough to justify the cost and effort.  You should contact a local tax professional to represent you. With the IRS, you need RECORDS AND DOCUMENTATION.

I hold Turbo Tax liable for legal support if needed I paid for professional advise from organization. Turbo tax wanted me to claim more than I originally did  and excepted the data with no issues . The idea is your software or whatever you want to call it did not lead me in the right direction and should have stooped with the deductions without keeping all the records . The system let me add up all me legal claims and wanted me to deduct more . I paid for the professional support  at time of payment are you telling me you will not support me now ..
