I have been incarcerated for 3 years, and now that I am out, I am trying to file for 2021. How do I file for 2021?

You cannot use TurboTax Online to file for 2021. TurboTax Online is only for the current tax year, which is now 2023. To file for 2021 you have to use the CD/Download TurboTax software for 2021. You can purchase a download at the following link. There is no free filing for past years.

The CD/Download TurboTax software can only be used on a Windows or Mac computer, not on a mobile device or a Chromebook.

Tax returns for past years cannot be e-filed. You will have to print your 2021 tax return, sign it, and file it by mail. When you file by mail you have to attach copies of your W-2s and any W-2G or 1099-R that has tax withheld. We suggest that you mail it by certified mail with a return receipt so that you get tracking and confirmation of delivery. Mail your federal and state tax returns in separate envelopes, because they go to different places. Follow the filing instructions that TurboTax prints.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
