I have an AMT of $0 but turbotax is telling me I have to file form 6251 and therefore upgrade to turbotax deluxe. Why?

It sounds like you have a fairly simple return. Suggest you download and fill out the proper paper forms (then mail) rather than paying for a TT upgrade.
