I have an agreement with ex-wife to claim child every other year. I don't claim him this year. His info is in turbotax but since he didn't qualify, he's not on return.

I've never paid attention to this, but it looks like the IRS hasn't had an issue with it either. My son will be on my return for the year I can claim him, but he's not listed on the years I don't claim him. The reason I am concerned, is because I remember putting his info into turbotax like I do every year. Why isn't his name on the actual return? Is this automatic? Since he doesn't qualify me for exemptions for the year I don't claim him?

The information for your children will remain in the system unless you edit them out. This helps with the next year you do claim them. It does seem a bit iffy at first but is such a common situation that nobody questions the year to year changes.

Your child should not be listed on your return for the years you don't claim him.
