I have a 1099-INT from interest last year, from the IRS, from my deceased father's taxes. How/where do I report it?

It came from Kansas City, MO, but when I try to enter it into this year's taxes, all it does is put it under IL for payer. Is there another place I should be entering the information?

Interest income from the IRS is reported on an IRS 1099-INT.  Follow these steps to enter the income:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Wages & Income.
  • You may need to click Add more income.
  • Scroll down to Investments and Savings click on the dropdown menu.
  • Click Start to the right of Interest on 1099-INT.
  • At the screen Your investments and savings, Click Add investments.

Not sure what is meant by 'IL for payer'.  Is a screenshot available?

I appreciate your reply, and I will try that, thank you very much for your help!

In answer to your question, I was putting info into the forms, and it asked for the city (then later, the zip code) of the payer. It didn't give me any way to change the state, even after putting in the zip code. It kept stating that the zip code I put in wasn't for IL (no, as the payer was from MO).

I'm thinking that I missed putting that in a specific place on federal, as it only showed up with an error, when doing state taxes.

There are a couple of things to consider here.

First, you stated that you are putting the numbers into the FORM.

  • Based on that it seems that you have the CD Desktop version of TurboTax.
  • You should make all entries in the Step By Step mode.  This will help guide you through the program.

Second, You've stated several times that the origin of the 1099-INT was MO.

  • The origin doesn't matter.
  • What matters is the state that you receive it in.
  • If that is IL, then it is posted correctly

If I've misunderstood your question, and this does not completely answer it, please contact us again and provide some additional details.
