You cannot mix 2016 & 2017 income on the same tax return... if you didn't make enough to file a 2016 return then you will just not file a 2016 return.

Are you married? Does your spouse have income?

Not married.  Daughter is now 20 yrs old and I'm in the process of being 100% disabled at 38 years old.

I know i can't combine them and it's always been my understanding that if you made less than $500 for the whole year you don't need to file taxes.  So 2016 I had zero income I didn't file.  But i just read somewhere even tho i didn't make enough that I should still file bcuz I may or may not qualify for some tax credit?

Sorry but there are no credits of any kind if you have no income.
