Any dependent can only be claimed for the whole year.  But the number of months lived with you is a determining factor in who gets to claim the kids.  The person where they stayed the longest gets the deduction usually.  No, there;s nothing you can do about it except go ahead and file your return in the manner you think is correct.  You would have to print and file by mail.  After about a year, the IRS will send you both letters asking for proof of where the children lived.  They then decide who gets the deductions or credits.  Save any receipts or forms you may have that prove they lived with you, such as school or doctor records.
