I had capital loss carryover from 2019. My 2020 tax filing is showing the correct amount however it isn't shown as a negative number. I want to ensure it's correct.

I want to make sure it's correct and offsetting my gains (not adding to it).  Is this a bug or does the capital loss carryover show as a positive number for everyone?

Let's make sure the capital loss carryover from 2019 is entered correctly or transferred correctly.

  1. Under Wages & Income > Investment Income > Capital Loss Carryover > Revisit
  2. OR Search (upper right) > Type capital loss carryover > Press enter > Click the Jump to link
  3. Review the entry to make sure it is entered as a negative by showing a minus sign in front of the amount, like the screen indicates.
  4. Select Edit to make any change

Once completed this review you can check your Form 1040, Line 7 to see the results. You can use the Preview My 1040  tool to view before you complete your return.

By using the Tax Tools you can take a quick review of your 1040:

  • To find Tools:
    1. Sign into your TurboTax account and open or continue your return.
    2. Select Tax Tools in the left menu.
    3. You'll find Tools beneath Tax Tools.
    4. Select View Tax Summary
    5. Select Preview My 1040 (left black panel)

I'm sure TurboTax would show the carryover correctly, and this will provide peace of mind for you.

It's almost certainly doing it correctly.  But you can verify it for your peace of mind.

Go look at the actual tax forms, Schedule D.  Your carryover will appear on lines 6 or 14.

You can verify with a calculator that lines 7 and 15 were computed correctly, by adding up the numbers above, and subtracting the loss carryover.

Note that the parentheses on lines 6 and 14 indicate that it is a negative number.
