In general, short-term disability payments are taxable when the premiums are paid by your employer.  If you paid the premiums, they are not taxable.

If you can see short-term disability on your W-2 or on a separate W-2, you will enter your Form W-2 as shown and answer all subsequent questions related to your disability payment.

In general, it is shown in Box 13 of your W-2. Third Party Sick will be checked.

Short-term disability is not the same thing as paid family leave.

If you are unsure about your short-term disability payment, you can ask your employer or payroll company.

If you are using TurboTax Online you can enter your Form W-2 as follows::

  1. Click on "Search" at the top right of your TurboTax screen.
  2. Type "Form W-2" in the search bar
  3. Click on the link "Jump to Form W-2 section of TurboTax".
  4. You will be prompted to enter your Form W-2 or
  5. if you have already entered it and need to edit it, you can select "Edit" next to your Form W-2.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop, you can:

  1. Type "Form W-2" in the search bar at the top right of your TurboTax screen.
  2. Click on the link "Jump to Form W-2"
  3. You will be prompted to enter your Form W-2 or
  4. if you have already entered it and need to edit it, you can select "Edit" next to your Form W-2.
