I had a girlfriend living with me for half the year last year can I claim head of household?

I filed as single but was told I could file as HOH and just admend my taxes

No.  They must live in your home for the entire year for a non-relative to be claimed as a dependent.  Without a dependent you cannot have Head of Household filing status.  Additionally a non-relative dependent does not qualify you for Head of Household filing status.
