That is self employment income.

You can enter Self Employment Income into Online Deluxe or Premier but if you have any expenses you will have to upgrade to the Self Employed version or use any of the Desktop CD/Download programs. All the Desktop programs have the same forms.  You just get more help and guidance in the higher versions.

You enter the entire $2,000 as business income (same as self-employment income). Enter the amount you actually spent for supplies as a business expense.

It doesn't matter whether the amount you spent for supplies is more than $500, less than $500, or exactly $500. You enter the amount you actually spent as an expense. The $500 payment that you received is just additional business income. It doesn't matter what they call it.

You should receive a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC from the county by the end of this month.  They have until the end of January to send it out.  My suggestion would be to wait to file your taxes until you see if you receive one.  If you do, you'll want the numbers on your tax return to match what's on the 1099.
