The IRS needs to be notified of the change from ITIN to SSN.
Once you qualify and obtain a SSN, you are required to notify the IRS of the change and discontinue using the ITIN. Once notified, the IRS will combine your tax records and begin using your SSN. Because the IRS automatically combines all of your tax records, you do not have to file an amended return to change the ITIN to a SSN. The IRS will automatically make the change to your tax return once it receives your request.
Yes. You can go to an IRS office to submit the necessary documentation for your SSN. To check the status of your ITIN to the SSN, you can call the IRS toll-free at 800-829-1040 if you are in the United States or 267-941-1000 (not a toll-free number) if you are outside the United States.
The following links will help to find the office nearest you.
Or you can mail the information. Make a copy of your Social Security card.
Make a copy of your CP565 notice, which is the Notice of ITIN Assignment you received from the IRS when assigned your ITIN.
Attach the copies of your Social Security card and the CP565 form to the back of the letter.
Sign and date the letter. Mail all three documents to: Internal Revenue Service Austin, TX 73301-0057
As Opus 17 mentioned before:
If the taxpayer already filed their tax return using the ITIN, they need to file an amended return by the April 18 deadline in order to claim the larger child tax credit, EIC, or any other benefits that require a valid SSN.

Did you already file a return for 2022? If yes, then you need to file an amended return to change from the ITIN to the SSN, in order to qualify for the larger child tax credit and possibly other benefits that require an SSN. The amended return should not be filed until your first return is processed and any refund paid, but the amended return MUST be filed before the April 18 deadline. If you can't file by the April 18 deadline, you need to get an extension and then file by October 15.
If you have not filed yet, and are having trouble changing your child’s info, the simplest thing to do is delete the child from the list of dependents and enter them again with the revised information.
You may not be able to efile your new return (if you are filing a new return) or your amended return, if the IRS doesn't recognize the new SSN. In that case, mail your return, using a mailing service that has tracking and proof of delivery.
Separately, you need to send a letter to the IRS as described. But sending the letter by itself, will not change your tax return or get you any extra credits.
