If you were the first person listed on that tax file, you can continue to use that file and take out take out the other spouse during the interview.  You may have to delete any W-2 or other forms created for that second spouse during the interview.

BUT

IF you were the second spouse listed on last year's tax return, then the procedure gets a bit touchy.  In that case you have to get a ways into your 2016 tax file interview as if nothing has changed, then, once all the personal info has been entered (as-if still married)....go up to the top of the page and click on

>MyAccount.....

>>Tools

>>>Transfer last year's TurboTax return from your computer

.......(yeah, that's not really what you are going to do, but it's necessary)

>>>>>Continue

Then on one of the pages that follows the interview asks you to browse to the tax file on your computer....you ignore that and go to the bottom of the page and click on the button

>>>>Continue without transferring

______________________

You will then get to restart your tax file...a minor bit of personal information may transfer that can be changed

.....(the first person's first name only, and birth date only on the prior tax return may be there still, and you change it to yourself)

...but nothing else comes in....no empty forms transfer, and no carryover information from the prior year transfers.  that is critical to to not messing up this years files.  Any information you need to enter form the prior year needs to be entered manually.

That "should" work...

____________________________

While you are at it, you should save  PDF files of all your prior year tax returns right now (before 1 January, after that some may be locked)...to your own computer.  Both in case you do end up having to create a new account, and also to share with your "ex"  (yes you should) for those years when you did file together.
