You were smart to check with the company. The email might have been phishing for your social security number and other personal data.
I believe there is a misunderstanding of my question. One of two thing are occurring:
1. TurboTax sends this emailing assuming I will have a W-2 from the company because I had one last year but I actually don't.
2. TurboTax knows I have a W-2 from the company and the W-2 was generated by mistake.
I believe 2 to be unlikely because I reached out to the company and am trying to get confirmation from TurboTax that 1 is the case. I called and could not get this confirmed and now no answer on the forum. I should not be getting emails saying I have a W-2 ready for somewhere I didn't work when its not even true and disappointing that no one can answer my simple question.
This was not a phishing email, it came from TurboTax.
TurboTax sends that email because you filed your taxes with TurboTax last year and that company has partnered with TurboTax. What that means is that since the company has partnered with TurboTax, its employees can import the W-2 directly into TurboTax instead of manually typing it in.
Since you filed with TurboTax last year and that company has already partnered with TurboTax, hence you got that email. If you no longer work for that company, you can ignore that email and instead input the new information which you will have for tax year 2021.
