I got a 2019 W2 from a company that I did not work at in 2019; my last day at that company was 12/28/2018. Why would I get a W2 from them?

Sometimes late Dec Paychecks go out in Jan...and Jan pay ends up on a 2019 W-2.

Thus, you probably(?) didn't have that final pay listed on your 2018 tax return W-2...so you have to report it now.

or...perhaps you received some kind of bonus pay, based upon your prior work in the company, that was issued in 2019  (that happened to me the year after I left my last company.....I wasn't going to argue about getting more income)

Even if you stopped working there before the end of the year, if you received your last paycheck during 2019, you will get a W-2 form for 2019.

If you think they have made a mistake, you can contact your former employer and ask them to withdraw the form.
