I get a 1099 misc for income from legal work for the state government. That income is also included on my W2 from my employer. How do I avoid getting taxed twice?

I get paid by the state government directly for legal work (in my name and my SSN).  When I receive those checks they go to my law firm and I get paid from that.  I get a 1099 misc from the state government, but that income is already included in my W2.  How do I report both but not get taxed on both.

What you should is to report income from this form 1099-MISC and claim the amounts you remitted to your law firm as an expense against that income, leaving you a profit of $0.

You will then report as income the wages paid to you by your law firm on your W-2.

By doing this, you would not be double-taxed.
