I shouldn't have to pay twice just to get the PDF of my taxes. I filed on time. The IRS got the tax return but now wants me to verify my identity, so I opened the PDF and it is corrupted, and won't open. Your site took down the online version, which means you want me to pay another $130 to get access to the tax form I already submitted. This is NOT REASONABLE.

You don't have to pay again to get a copy of your 2024 PDF if you already had paid previously. BUT...you may have to wait a while until the 2024 PDFs become available again. Log in and at the Tax Home page, scroll way down to the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents." If 2024 is not there, it's most likely this: Every year right after the end of extended filing season, TurboTax goes through an archival procedure, and the PDFs become temporarily unavailable for a period of time while they are doing whatever they do with the 2024 PDFs while they make way for the upcoming 2025 online product. At some point (I don't know how many days), the 2024 PDFs should once again become available in the "Your Tax Returns & Documents" section.
What program are you using to try to open the PDF? Is it Adobe Reader or another PDF reader? Have you tried opening it with your browser?
ADDENDUM EDIT NOTE 11/03/2025 at 8:53 PM Pacific
Here's info on how to try to open it using a browser instead of a PDF reader.
I'm using Windows, so I can go into Explorer, find the PDF in the file directory, and then right-click on it. Then in the popup menu I chose "OPEN WITH". Then I choose a browser, such as Edge, Firefox, Chrome.
If using a Mac, I don't know how that works in a Mac, if there's not something similar to "Open with", you would need to launch the browser first, and then use the browser's menu to open a file.
Thank you for the helpful suggestion but it did not work. The file is well and truly corrupted.
i have tried to open it with
- Adobe PDF reader
- Chrome
- Firefox
- MS Word
all say the file is corrupted (actually Firefox says nothing, just shows a blank page)
I looked at the prior documents and history and there is no record at all of the purchase. (My bank statement shows the charge, and the IRS got the return).
Did you use Online TurboTax in prior years, too? If so, do you see your prior years when you scroll down to look in "Your Tax Returns & Documents?" I see evidence of my 2023, 2022, 2021, etc., but no evidence yet of 2024 during this limbo period. At some point I should be able to see 2024 in that section as well.
That being said, if you used online TurboTax in prior years and do not see the prior years in that section, you may be in the wrong account. Many people end up with more than one account without realizing it. Here's a way to look for multiple accounts.
You can have up to 5 accounts that use the same email address for notification purposes. A User ID may be an email address, but it doesn't have to be. It might be only part of an email address, or it can be anything at all.
To get a list of your User IDs, reset password, and recover account access, etc., you can use the tool at the link below. When using the Account Recovery tool, try using your phone number first if you can still access it. After that, if necessary, then run the tool on your email address(es) you can access.
NOTE: Before running the account recovery tool below, log out of all Intuit accounts including this user forum, or you might end up in a loop. Then clear your browser Internet cache, close your browser, then reopen it, and go to the link below. You may wish to copy this link so you can paste it into the new browser session.

If still no luck after running that on your phone number you can still access and email address(es) that you can access, here's another method:
Go back to the tool again, but this time leave the data field blank, scroll down a bit, then choose the small blue link that says "Try something else", and it will look you up by other parameters.
Another possible option for viewing your 2024 return but a lot of work:
If you see evidence of your *.tax2024 data file in that account and can download it, then you can talk to TurboTax Support, explain the IRS situation, and ask them to furnish you a download of the 2024 software. You can then install the 2024 software and open the *.tax2024 data file to either view the return or to make PDFs at will. However, if you also have a state return in the data file, when you try to open the data file, it will likely produce an error notice and won't open unless/until you also install the state software, which might ask you to pay for state unless you ask TurboTax Support to also furnish the state software. However, it may be that TurboTax would furnish you a desktop product that already includes 1 state program. But you'd still have to install the state program (if applicable) before opening the file.
Otherwise, you can phone TurboTax Support to see if they suggest anything.
