You need to file the actual return if you only filed an extension back in April. Did you fill out the whole tax return? Log back in and go though the File tab, all 3 steps and hit the big Submit Returns Now button to file.
If your extension payment from 4868 line 7 did not automatically show up on 1040 you need to enter it. So make sure it's not already there before you enter it!
To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension) go to
Federal Taxes (or Personal Tab for desktop H&B version)
Deductions and Credits
Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button
Next page second section Payments with Extension
Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid
For 2024 Federal Extension payments should be on schedule 3 line 10. And go to 1040 line 31.
Pay attention to which year you are entering for a State Extension payment. A prior year state extension payment is also deductible on the federal return so be sure to enter them on the right lines.
Hello and thanks for the help -- I tried the path you described but was unlucky.
I filed an extension for federal and state on April 6, 2025 for Tax year 2024.
I finished my taxes on Turbo Tax but did not file electronically -- I filed "on paper" but have not yet sent the forms in.
I paid the 2024 tax amounts on both my federal return and state returns on April 15th.
I cannot go back and enter the "amounts paid" on April 15th since the tax returns were already finalized -- or can I?
Action item for me: I need to print/USPS mail in my returns for 2024 Federal and State. I will also include a copy of my bank statement that shows the electronic transfer for the federal and state payments....
Does anyone have a different suggestion?
You can fix or enter into your return if you haven't mailed it yet. You need to click on Add a State to let you back in. You are not actually adding a state, it just lets you back in. Then you can enter your payments and you should be able to efile instead of mailing it.
To change from Mail to Efile........
In TurboTax Online, sign in to your account.
Select Tax Home in the left menu.
Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.
Select 2024, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this just gets you back into your return).

Thanks again -- I followed your path -- then the last step now says this:
"Hmm, looks like we hit a slight snag in this section
