How to amend (change or correct) a return you already filed

You cannot change a MFJ after the due date if the return.
If you filed a joint return and not married then you need professional help. You cannot simply amend but must have the IRS void the joint return as an "invalid" return. That is not a simple procedure and even many tax professional do not know how to do it.

I hate to tell you this but as I said above, you cannot amend a joint return to change the filing status after the fact. You can submit an amended return if you want. Amended returns take about 4 months to process, but when the IRS discovers that you are changing a joint return, they will deny the amended return and send a letter telling you what I said above.
