I filed IRS return with dependent with renewal of ITIN. but ITIN is not approved yet. I need to file the state returns without dependent. How can I do that?

IRS first rejected renewal stating that i need to submit returns. Which I did last week but 15 Oct ***** line for state coming close and must file now without dependent.

You have two options. First if you're getting a refund on the state, you can just file the state late without penalties or interest.

Next if you want to file the state now without the dependent log back in click on add a state then return to the my info tab and remove the child. Then complete the state tab, the review tab then choose to mail in the state in the file tab. Doing so will populate the proper forms and instructions needed to mail in the state return.

If you're going to wait to file the state later with the dependent then print off a copy to mail now because access to the return will be shut down shortly after October 15th.

Thank you for the reply.

The option 1- When I remove the dependent, it also recalculated the already filed IRS taxes along with state. So numbers don’t tie then.

Option 2 - I have NY - good refund and NJ - 0 refund (I already paid the Tax liability).

Is there a way to keep IRS number the same but recalculate the state returns By removing dependents? If not, is it safe to just not file for states till I get the ITIN.

Thank you!!

The option 1- When I remove the dependent, it also recalculated the already filed IRS taxes along with state. So numbers don’t tie then.   That is just what it is ... you cannot file the fed or state without the ITIN ... if you file now you will need to add the child back later and amend the state return.

Option 2 - I have NY - good refund and NJ - 0 refund (I already paid the Tax liability).  As long as you do not owe then filing late is not an issue ... just leave the child and print the return to mail in later when the ITIN has been renewed.

If not, is it safe to just not file for states till I get the ITIN.   Again ... as long as you do not owe then filing the state late is not an issue ... just leave the child on  and print the return to mail in later when the ITIN has been renewed.

*** the online program will close down mid October  so using the Print Center save a PDF of both return with and without the worksheets   and print a mail in copy now so you have it ready to go later.
