Yes, the IRS wants you keep the names in the same order as previous filed.  The IRS checks the first name on the return or extension, and in their system the first name of the spouse and SSN must match what they have in their system.

Try revising the names to see if you can get accepted.

You don’t need to file Form 4868 if either of you makes a payment now using the IRS
electronic payment options.
You can pay all or part of your estimated income tax due and indicate that the payment is for an extension using Direct Pay (select EXTENSION), the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, or using a credit or debit card. Your extension is then automatically granted and you will receive a confirmation number for your records.

Any small amount will do.
But, you must bring your total tax paid by Tax Day up to 90% of your final tax to stay away from penalty.

If you already know you will get a refund, you don't need an extension.

@fanfare They are not asking about a payment but about the order of names.

@bluedeb

on the IRS website, only one name needs to be entered.

@fanfare  the first name stills has to be in the same order as on their return if they want to e-file.  You can put both names on an extension when you file a joint return.

You do have to file an extension when you can’t file your return online. An extension only extends the time you have to file.  If you owe taxes they have to be paid by today to avoid a penalty and interest.
