I failed to submit my taxes for 2016 this year. I realize it is past the deadline. What should I do?

I filled out all of my W-2 and tax information using turbo tax I simply failed to send it. One main issue was I was unable to find my previous accountants I'd number or whatever was required to submit the forms electronically. Basically I kept planning to find that information and submit the forms before the extension date. But I was unable to find it and life took over. I was planning to work on a fasfa when I realized I hadn't filed my taxes so I need to do that. I still don't know where to find the previous accountants I'd number. Is my only option submitting it through the mail? Are there any reprocusions for it being late? I am expecting to receive about $100 so I do not owe anything more. Thanks.

There are no penalties for filing a tax return after the due date if you are receiving a tax refund.  A 2016 tax return has to be printed and mailed, it can no longer be e-filed.

I am in the same situation as you, only 10 months later. I had some problems filing for 2016 and life got the best of me and I never filed. I just tried to fill out my 2018-2019 FAFSA and need to complete the 2018 taxes first. What did you end up doing for your situation and did you face any penalties?

You have to mail a 2016 return now.  If you are getting a refund there is no interest or penalty for being late.  You still need to prepare 2016?  If you owe the IRS will bill you later for any interest or penalty.

You can't do a prior year return online or efile it, but you can buy the Desktop Download versions for 2014-2016 from Turbo Tax here. Be sure to pick the right one, Windows or Mac....

You will have to print and mail in prior year returns.

Or if you have a simple return you can get the blank forms from the IRS and fill them in by hand for free.
