I entered the amount in box 12 DD from W2, nothing in box 18. I now read that number is just for your info, so why did Turbo Tax put that on my form & give me a refund?

(Note...this post transferred into this new community from an earlier year)

I just checked my 2017 IA software.

1) I entered a DD and $999 in box 12 on a W-2 form in the federal section.

2)  I went thru the Iowa Questions and error check again, and then checked the 2017 IA 1040.  No $$ showed up on line 18.  So it doesn't appear that TurboTax enters any $$ as an insurance premium onto line 18 automatically from your W-2 entry of  box 12 Code DD and it's $$  (at least not in the most current version of 2017 TTX Fed and IA).

________________________

3) That doesn't mean that some other $ entered elsewhere won't show up on line 18 of the IA-1040..... For instance, if you entered any Medical Premiums paid in the Medical Deductions section in the Federal section, then those $$ transfer over to the IA-1040 and are added into line 18 of the IA 1040.   (And you may have mistakenly entered, or mis-entered your W-2 code DD values in the Federal Medical deductions area)

___________

4) and...IF you made NO Medical premium entries in the Federal Medical expenses section , if no premium entries are there, only then  will the IA interview specifically ask you for your Medical Premiums you paid....but it also tells you not to include any Code DD entries from your W-2 form (picture below) that asks you to put in your medical premiums.

So right now, I can't see that this error was caused by TTX, and would have to have been some error you made yourself when making your premium entries in either the Federal section, or the state section.

Sorry

If it is reported on W-2, it is entered into the tax software. Nothing is done with it --- so there no tax consequences . i.e. it does not increase your tax or increase your refund.  Rest Easy

Turbo Tax DID put it on our tax form, line 18 in tax year 2017, and the Iowa Department of Revenue is now coming for the adjustment amount plus interest. So I feel this would be Turbo Tax responsibility as it seems this may have been a glitch in their software and should not fall back on us.

You entered it in box 12?  Did you pick the right code DD from the drop down box?  Not just code D?

this is the only post I've seen regarding your issue.  this usually indicates that you incorrectly entered some information on your return which makes it your fault not TT's . but if you really think It's TT fault, put in a claim.
