I don’t want to file state tax ... do they keep insisting that you file stare before they will file your federal tn does not require most people to file state

It's not possible to efile a state return prior to efiling a Federal return.  They have to be either efiled at the same time, or the Federal return has to be efiled first.

If you started a state return you are sure you don't need it, here's how to delete it:

Here's some info on Tennessee:

According to TurboTax:

"Tennessee residents only file a TN tax return if their interest and dividend income exceeded $1,250 ($2,500 for joint filers). This is the Hall Income Tax."
