I do not want to file the state return at this time..how do I only file and print my federal return. Have tried but is requiring that I say How I will pay state taxes

Then say you will send a check to pay the state. Then it is up to you whether you pay the state by check or directly on the state's website. Just be aware that Monday October 16 is the last day you can e-file for 2016. After that your return will have to be printed, signed and mailed.

To not pay for state you have to delete it. You can add it back in later but you will have to pay. https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3301384
