You are not required to file your 2017 Tax Returns before filing your 2018 Tax Returns.

If you go ahead and file your 2018 Tax Returns first, be sure to use -0- for your 2017 AGI when you e-file them since the IRS has not processed a 2017 Tax Return for you yet.

Since I have an installment agreement, I have been advised by its to file 2017 taxes asap. I have a 2018 extension which ends 15th of October. May I use this format to file both returns?

@Tjt1898 No.  You cannot use the online software for a 2017 return.  The current online software can only be used to prepare and file a 2018 return.  And, you have a week before it shuts down.  After October 15, 2019, online tax prep and e-filing for 2018 will also shut down and then you will need desktop software which must be downloaded to a PC or Mac and your 2018 return will have to be printed, signed and mailed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2017 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2015, 2016, or 2017 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

Each year's tax return must be prepared and filed separately.  Do not even think about combining 2017 and 2018 income on the same tax return.
