I did not itemize this year due to the federal change. Now I am wondering if I should have due how it might have effected the State return. I live in VA. Any thoughts

For Virginia, no. 

We are encouraging taxpayers to enter the deductions for just that reason. They may not count on the federal, but be allowed on the state return. Virginia, however, does not give you the option to itemize deductions if using the standard deduction on the federal return.
