Wait, is he eligible to be your dependent? If so, he cannot "claim himself" (even if you choose not to claim him). He should mark that he is a dependent on his own return, and then resubmit the efile.
If however, if he truly is independent, come back at the end of March to file a 1040-X amended return. Since that will take several months to process, he'll have to file his own return by mail.
Firstly, even if you amend, he won't be able to e-file, since the amending process is so much slower, that the e-file database won't be updated before the deadline.
Secondly, if he can be claimed as a dependent (meets the qualifications) then he must answer yes to the question "Can you be claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer" even if he does not want to be. See this,
So are you stating there is no way around this now. He should not have been claimed. If this is not going to be fixed by the deadline, what is his option then?
If your son can't be claimed as a dependent, he prints his tax return and files by mail. You file an amended return to remove him as a dependent. See instructions here.
