You might have to delete an reenter your IL state return.
Please ensure that you have entered Illinois in the State that you lived in in the "My Info" section even when you were stationed somewhere else:
Also, make sure that you checked the active-duty military box for the W-2 on the "Do any of these uncommon situations apply to this W-2?" screen right after you enter your W-2.
Furthermore, when you get to your state return double-check that your military pay is entered correctly on the "Military Pay Exclusion" screen for Illinois.
Please see Pub102 Illinois Filing Requirements for Military Personnel for additional information.
So, my "home of address" in my army file is illinois, because i was recruited in illinois.
All my fellow soldiers file the tax with "home of address" as it is written in ERB.
So i put illinois as my residency in tax return file, but i have physically lived here in Hawaii during 2020.
If i change to "illinois" according to your advise (in "my info") then it just add one more problem which asks me "Date this person established residence in state above" and do i have to put 01/01/2020??? which does not make sense at all, and it still circles around.
So it did not help me at all, but just added one more problem.
Your IL residency was all year. You want the address listed that the IRS can correspond with you about this return for the next 3 years. It is fine to fill in that you were IL resident all year as you were. The program is just verifying in that section that you don't need a part year return. It won't affect your state return. Resident 1/1/2020 - 12/31/2020
