I became a widow in nov 2015. Do I file single or widow? I have not been able to work

I was told life insurance does not get reported.

If you were to file, you would choose single, unless you have a qualifying child. You are correct, life insurance proceeds are not taxable and your income apart from that would have to be more than:

 

Under age 65    $12,200

65 or older          $13,850
