I apid nearly $1000 in state taxes why am I only getting $261 back ?

Why would you think it would be more?

You get a tax refund if the total tax payments you made were greater than your total tax liability on a tax return.  The greater your tax liability the less of the tax payments you receive as a tax refund.

You have to look at your state tax return to see the payments and the liabilities.  Using the online editions you cannot view your tax return until you either pay for the TurboTax account fees or you file the tax return.
