I looked at the previous FAQs on this problem but none of them worked. For a gambling winning on a cruise ship there is no payer state & payer’s ID number. I looked at previous FAQs on this problem but none of the suggestions worked. I tried to save it with the fields blanked (skipped) and I tried to put a 0 in it. Neither worked. It looks like the program requires a state to be listed in the box. It will accept a 0 in the payers ID number. Do we need to print and submit as a paper copy to IRS?
There are a couple options you can choose from.
First, you can print and mail in the return with the required documents.
You can use 00-0000000 for the Payer ID and your own address for the Payer's address (this works since your state would be the only state that may require tax on the winning)
Or you can enter the winnings as if you did not get a W-2G. The income, whether reported form Form W-2G or as "Other Income" is reported on the same line of your federal tax return, which is Schedule 1 line 8b, which flows to Form 1040 line 8.
For this third option, go back to
Wages & Income
Less Common Income
Prizes, Awards, and Gambling Winnings
delete the W-2G entry
return to that same section and select "We didn't receive a W-2G"
Enter the amount of winnings form the W-2G
Continue and enter losses if applicable
Select DONE
If Federal tax was withheld, continue to
Deductions & Credits
Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
Other Income Taxes START
Withholding not already entered on a W-2 or 1099 START
Select YES and enter the tax withheld
