I am over 25 years old and I had a job with taxable income under $12k, can I claim my education credit as a student?

I cannot be claimed as a dependent on some one else's return. My job was a work study and other types of jobs.

Yes you can and you will receive the refundable portion of the credit assuming that your earned income is more than half of your support. Is your earned income enough to satisfy that requirement? Do you have a living parent? Your income is so low that you would not receive the non refundable portion of the American Opportunity Credit.
