I am not able to file my federal returns because several lines of Form 1040 have a zero value. What does this mean? How can I fix it?

It means you don't have any taxable income and cannot e-file a return with no taxable income. If all you have is Social Security income and you are not filing married filing Separate, you don't need to file a return at all.
