I am missing one inconsequential K-1. Should I file now and ament or file an extension

One K-1 that will have a very small impact on my overall return won't come in until September.  When that investment mattered, I filed for an extension but now, should I file now and amend later or should I file an extension and wait to file the full return until I have that last document?  THANK YOU

You can do either, but it's important to know that you may have interest and penalties assessed only if you end up owing.

Here's how to EXTEND:

If you need more time to file your 2016 return with the IRS, submit an extension request before midnight Tuesday, April 18.

To do this, select Easy Extension from the MyTurboTax drop-down menu (on mobile devices, tap in the upper-left corner to open the menu items).

If you don't see a "MyTurboTax" menu, search for extend inside your program and then click or tap the "Jump to" link.

You can also go the Easy Extension site to e-file your extension or print out Form 4868 from the IRS, fill it out, and mail it on or before April 18. Complete mailing instructions are on the printout.

Note: An IRS extension gives you until October 16 to file, but it won't give you until October to pay your taxes. Those are still due April 18.

Here's how to AMEND:

You'll need to amend your return, the same way that you filed your original return.

You need to wait till your original return is accepted by the IRS before you amend.

If you have already filed your return, first print out a copy of your original return for your records.

Then go into Turbo Tax and click Amend (change) a filed and accepted return under Manage Your Return.

It's zeroed out (which is why you need to keep a copy of your original return).  You can then add any additional info that you've received, and Turbo Tax walks you through the rest!

Addresses to Mail Amendments To

You mail the 1040X along with any schedules that changed as a result of the amendment (except the 1040).

You also include the federal copy of any new W-2s or any 1099-Rs that had tax withheld.
