I am helping my fiance do her taxes. I am a qualifying "other dependent", but the $500 tax credit is not reducing her owed amount. Line 3 says 500. Line 16 is blank. Why?

Lines 3 and 16 of what form?

Sorry, ran out of room... Lines 3 and 16 from the "Child Tax Credit and Credit for Other Depends Worksheet" preview that was displayed so we could make sure it looked correct.

Line 3 is "add lines 1 and 2", and it equals 500.

Line 2 is "number of other dependents, including qualifying children who are not under 17 or who do not have the required social security number: 1 X $500."

This is saying I am being counted as her dependent for the year and she should be getting a $500 tax credit.

Line 16 is the final line of the document and it is blank even though it says "this is your child tax credit and credit for other dependent" and even though at the top it states she'd be getting the credit...

We found within Deductions & Credits>You and Your Family>Child and Other Dependent Tax Credits... "We see you HAVE qualifying children or other dependents (me, her fiance), *but* based on your income and other tax info, you DON'T qualify for this credit."

Why does she not qualify for the $500 credit if I am a qualifying dependent? She barely made anything last year, but still paid over half the bills due to me being a partially disabled, unemployed veteran, and she owes federal tax, so that credit would be very helpful right now.

It doesn't state why or what "other tax info" is disqualifying her from receiving the credit...

The credit for other dependents is a new $500 personal tax credit:

  • The credit is worth $500 for each qualifying dependent.
  • The credit is nonrefundable. It can reduce taxes due, but is not a refund.
  • It is claimed on line 12 of the 2018 Form 1040.

Yeeeeeesssss..... "it can reduce taxes due" ... this is why I am trying to figure out why it is NOT reducing her taxes owed... we understand that it is not refundable.  She owes taxes.  We put me down as a dependent, because I do qualify as hers, because I was living with her all of 2018, she paid more than half of all the "support" for the year, I had actually zero income, I am a US citizen, etc.

It seems like you didn't fully read the question.

Could you please recheck?  Thanks.
