I am filing a joint return with my husband. He lives and works in Massachusetts and I live and work in Florida. Can I file a joint state return for Massachusetts?

Since Florida has no state tax there is no need to file a state return for Florida but am I required to file in Massachusetts.

No, according to page 5 of the Massachusetts instructions, under "what are the rules for filing a joint return?", you would both have to be residents of Massachusetts for the same period of time during 2016 in order to file a joint return. http://www.mass.gov/dor/docs/dor/forms/inctax16/f1-nrpy/form-1-instructions.pdf
