NY state requires efile. Fed return rejected due to issue with dependent SSN so I have to mail in. I asked NY and they said I should be able to unlink state and fed . ???

I am afraid you will not be able to e-file your state return if Federal is being mailed in. See link below:

Per my call with NY State Tax dept about this very problem - you have to transpose your turbotax form to the same forms found on the NY Tax website. They will not accept Turbotax forms that are printed off the website because of the barcode present on the downloaded turbotax form.
