How was the deduction on line 40 of my 2016 return calculated ?

I don't have a schedule A page in my return. I'm 67 yrs old if that matters.

How was the deduction on line 40 of my 2016 return calculated ?

Line 40 of Form 1040 is for your standard or itemized deduction.  The standard deduction is based upon you filing status and age.  Whichever is higher, standard or itemized deduction, is used for Line 40.  If you were age 65 or older the standard deduction is increased.

Standard deductions for 2016

  • Single - $6,300 add $1,550 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Separately - $6,300 add $1,250 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Jointly - $12,600 add $1,250 for each spouse age 65 or older
  • Head of Household - $9,300 add $1,550 if age 65 or older

Also be aware that itemized deductions phase out at high income levels.
