How to file taxes on time when waiting for parents to amend theirs because they accidentally claimed me as dependent?

This is the first year I am filing taxes because I have a full time job. I am not considered dependent but my parents accidentally filed and submitted theirs with me as dependent. By the time they submit 1040-x form on March 25th to get it processed, I don’t think I’ll be able to file on time by April 15. I already tried and it got rejected.

You will have to print and mail your tax return.  If you have no taxes owed or have a tax refund you can file your tax return at any time up through April 15, 2024.  There are no penalties for filing after the due date if no taxes are owed or there is a tax refund.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for how to print a tax return for mailing using the online editions  - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/printing/help/how-do-i-print-and-mail-my-return-in-turbotax-online...

Is there a difference or penalty for requesting a tax extension?

If no taxes are owed there is no difference or penalty for filing for a tax extension.  The extension gives you an additional 6 months to file the tax return on or before October 15, 2021.

But if taxes are owed they have to be paid on or before April 15, 2021 to avoid a failure to pay penalty.

What if no taxes are owed but I’m supposed to get a refund? Do I have to pay interest if it’s after April 15 because of the extension?
