How to eliminate a schedule D transaction incorrectly reported on line 3?

I have a short term loss incorrectly reported on Schedule D, line 3.   I have no idea how it got to line 3 of schedule D as this loss is from a k-1.  The loss also appears (correctly) on line 5 of Schedule D (losses from k-1).  As a result my schedule D is double counting this loss.  How do I eliminate the loss on line 3?  The amount from line 3 is coming from Part I of form 8949 box C.  The description of the property is the name of the LP issuing the k-1.  I need to eliminate this loss transaction on form 8949 so that it will not go to line 3 of schedule D but I have no idea how to eliminate it.  In forms mode, when I go to form 8949 it will not let me delete the transaction.  The only time I input the loss was when I entered my k-1 information. TurboTax is treating this like I sold some of my partnership interest which I did not.  How do I eliminate the schedule D, line 3 amount?

the 8949 is not editable. rather go to the cap asset sale worksheet.

did you import the k-1 info?

How do I go to the cap asset sale worksheet?  The only way I see that I can edit schedule D sales is via the 1099 but my entry was input when entering my k-1 numbers.

You can check this using Forms Mode in TurboTax Desktop. It's unlikely the Box 8 loss from Schedule K-1 (1065) would be reported as a Capital Asset Sale unless you disposed of this investment during the year.

  1. Open your return and click the Forms icon in the TurboTax header.
  2. In the list of Forms in My Return on the left, scroll down and look for Form 8949 under Schedule D.
  3. Click the form name to open it in the large window.
  4. If the error from Schedule D Line 3 appears on this form, right click the description and click Data Source.
  5. Choose the forms listed in the popup as possible sources - Cap Asset Sales is one. Note that Schedule K-1 can be a source if the partnership interest was disposed of during the year. Review the other sources to rule out other transactions.
  6. Cap Asset Sales (1) has a Quick Entry table that can be edited (blue font in yellow box). You cannot change any entries in black. Overrides will invalidate your return from e-filing.
  7. If you are able to identify the entry and resolve the issue, click Step-by-Step in the header to return to the main screens.

Thank you Patricia but nothing happens when I right click the "Description of Property (line 1, column a of form 8949).  Just to be clear, the error is on form 8949, Part I, line 1a.  It appears that I sold an interest in this k-1 partnership but that is not the case and I never indicated that a sale was made when entering my k-1 numbers in TurboTax.  What shows up incorrectly on this line (line 1a of form 8959)) is the short term loss I entered in box 8 when entering all the k-1 numbers for this k-1, which I got from box 8 of the k-1.  This loss should only show up on Part I, line 5 of schedule D.  For some reason the loss is showing up as an asset sales (line 3 of schedule D and line 1a of form 8949).  I need to delete the asset sale but I have no idea how to do so.

We have tested the Schedule K-1 Box 8 entry but are unable to reproduce the experience you have seen. It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2025" file to test this issue further.

If you would be willing to send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information, please follow these instructions:

In TurboTax Desktop, open your return and go to Online in the TurboTax header. (On a Mac computer, choose Share or Help.)

  1. Choose Send Tax File to Agent.
  2. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click Send on this screen and wait for the Token number to appear.
  3. Reply to this thread with a screenshot of your Token number (this avoids Community filters for numbers with a dash) and tag (@) the Expert requesting the token from you.
  4. Please include any States that are part of your return - this is VERY important.

We will then be able to see the same experience you are having. If we are able to determine the cause, we'll reply here and possibly provide you with a resolution.

Thank you Patricia.  Before sending you a diagnostic file, I think I will try deleting the entire k-1 and re-entering all my numbers from that particular k-1 and see if the asset sale goes away.
