Follow these steps to downgrade to a different TurboTax Online product:

  • Open your return if you haven't already.
  • In the left menu, select Switch Products.
  • Select Downgrade.

This does not work.  Logging into Turb Tax FORCES you to start with Live Basic, Deluxe, or Premium.  I tried customer service and they said "go through the return and it will give you the option at the end."  Two hours later the option is the same.  I found a way to  switch to "do it yourself."  Its all greyed out.  Complete garbage.  My return is simple and I have NEVER needed any Live support and now Turb Tax is defaulting and forcing you to try to buy "Live" version.

You can downgrade from the Live product as long as you haven't already used Expert advice.

When you log in to a TurboTax Online account, and you wish to downgrade , open your return and enter any category (such as Wages and Income or Deductions and Credits). Then, look at the left side menu.

Near the bottom, just above Sign Out, you should see the option "Switch Products". See screenshot.

Click the arrow next to "Switch Products" to show more options. One of them is "Downgrade". See screenshot. Select "Downgrade" and follow the instructions that appear.

If you are having trouble navigating, check your Internet connection. Then, sign out of TurboTax and sign back in. Reboot your device. You could also try another browser; Chrome generally works well.

If you started with an Online product, have not yet paid for it, and would rather use a Desktop (Download) product:

  1. Install and/or open your 2024 TurboTax Desktop.
    • If you have not purchased TurboTax Desktop software, select the product you need to complete your return.
    • Important: If your return includes a state, make sure you also install the corresponding state program(s) in order to proceed.
  2. Select Continue From TurboTax Online.
  3. Sign in to your Intuit Account.
  4. Your data will be imported into TurboTax Desktop, and your return will open once data transfer is complete.

If you don't see Downgrade, or you have already used the Tax Expert feature, you can clear your return and start over as long as you haven’t paid yet. After clearing your return, you can select the TurboTax product that best suits your needs.

Copying and pasting what Intuit already posted is useless. This does not work. I already said i tried this then you copy and paste the same crap. Then you roll into internet connection?  What a clown response. Jesus. Almost as useless as speaking to the actual customer service people who have no idea what they are doing.

However, i did end up figuring it out.

Turbo Tax forces everyone to start with the live product. Its a money grab and a shady practice. Whatever.

First thing you have to do is “downgrade” from the Live Version to  $89” / “$129” WITHOUT Live version. I know its still not the price anyone wants to pay but we will get there.

Once you downgrade out of Live version. Then you have to downgrade a SECOND time into the correct non-live version that you originally wanted to be on. So the free basic. $39 deluxe. And so on.

It’s ridiculous but i hope these steps help folks in the future.
