Yes, you can discard the TurboTax Software disc after 3 years, as after 3 years you can no longer amend your return. This would be the primary reason for needing the program after you file. But if you are concerned with an audit and the potential for a substantial error, you may want to keep it for 6 years as that is as far back as they usually go. Keeping the disc, is not absolutely necessary, as you can and should save a PDF copy and print a copy of your return and all the supporting worksheets when you file your return. This will give you all the information you need in case of an audit or any other reason you may need an old tax return such as items that can carry forward from year to year or depreciation on a rental property taken over the years.
Generally, the IRS can include returns filed within the last three years in an audit. If we identify...
Something else to consider when deciding when to throw away the old disc, is if your operating system supports the program for that year. For example, TurboTax 2020 will not run on Windows 11, it says it is compatible with Windows 8 and 10. So if you have Windows 11, TurboTax 2020 or earlier would not run on your computer.
Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac). And the download will always be up to date with all the updates.
But even if you have the CDs you won’t be able to reinstall 2020 or prior. They only support the last 3 years. And the License Code started in 2019. So 2019 and newer needs to connect to Turbo Tax to verify the License Code. But they have stopped supporting 2020 and prior. So you can’t activate 2019 and each year going forward.
And if you do get 2018 and prior installed you won’t be able to update it or download any state programs. So you should save all your returns to a pdf file with all the worksheets. Open each year and save them now if you haven’t already.
