My child answered No to whether they can be claimed as a dependent on another return...so my efile was rejected. I found out my child needs to amend their return and I will have to paper file. However, my child filed the amendment but didn't actually change anything, they just selected dependent change but didn't go in and change anything. Now I believe they need to file a second amendment. When they do that TT (online version) sees there was an amendment already filed and asks if it has been filed and processed or filed and not processed. They I had them select filed not processed because it has only been accepted and TT suggests to wait until it's processed, which from my research online can take 8 to 12 weeks which will be after Apr 15 for paper filing my return.
I am not sure how to proceed. Thanks for the help

The thing your child needed to change was their answer in MY INFO regarding whether they could be claimed as someone else's dependent. They did not need to change anything about their income, etc. They do not need to amend again. You will need to file by mail. Once your child puts their SSN into the system, you are blocked from e-filing your own return with their SSN on your return. You do not have to wait----mail your return when you have it ready to put into an envelope.
This is very common. Teenagers and young adults filing first returns make this mistake a lot---and the parents who have to file by mail suffer the consequences....
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
I guess I don't understand why my child doesn't need to file another amendment. Their first amendment didn't change the dependent question in MY INFO. If they don't change that won't it affect the processing of my paper return?
They did NOT change their answer to the question about being claimed? What --if anything--- did they change? If they did not change and say they can be claimed, then yes, they will have to send in another amended return. Meanwhile, you have to file by mail. You have literally no hope of e-filing this year.
Correct, the did not change the answer to the question about being claimed. Nothing was changed...I know she didn't wait for instructions from me before filing the amendment...kids. Anyway, the first amendment status is accepted but when she tries to do another amendment TT sees that an amendment was already filed and asks
If the amendment was filed and processed....
If the amendment was filed and NOT processed...
and I believe the third option was not yet filed...
Since the current status of the first amendment was accepted I had her select filed and NOT processed and TT said to wait until it was processed before filing another amendment. So do we have to wait the 8 to 12 weeks the IRS says it takes to process amendments before filing the second amendment? Or do we select filed and processed in TT and proceed that way.
Thanks again for the help
If you file another amendment before the previous one is processed you could cause additional delays. I would wait until the first amendment is processed before filing the second.
Thank you for that information. Do I still file my taxes when they are finished (now) as xmasbaby0 suggests? It seems that would cause confusion on the IRS end if they process my return before my kids amendment.
Thanks again for everyone's advice.
Yes. You are paper filing so that is okay.
