Please explain what "updating" your 2023 return means to you----what are you trying to do? Do you mean update the desktop software?
I just got off the phone with a turbo tax rep. She said my federal taxes was rejected because a 1095 A was not uploaded. She said I need to update it and not to amend it. But I am not seeing that option I am on desktop- not the app
Oh----if it was rejected, it was never filed in the first place. So no, you do not click on anything that says "amend" for a rejected return. You just need to open up that return on your desktop program and enter the 1095A that you forgot to enter last year.
To enter your 1095A go to Federal>Deductions and Credits> Medical>Affordable Care Act (Form 1095A)
But...you will not be able to e-file. E-filing is permanently closed for 2023. You have to print, sign and date it in ink, and mail the return.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
They already have all the other information such as W2s as everything was efiled. I had no idea it was rejected until today because on turbo tax it still says both my federal and state taxes were accepted. I no longer have physical copies of my W2s as I thought this was already taken care of. I paid for turbo tax to help me if there was an issue, and I was never notified of an issue. Only seen everything was accepted. Only to hear no it was rejected even though the site says accepted. I hope that makes sense. Hard to explain over text. I have been trying to talk to a representative on the phone again but cannot get anyone.
You used the word "rejected" in your post, making it seem as if the return was not filed successfully at all. Apparently the return was e-filed and accepted---or so you say.
TurboTax gets no information from the IRS after you file your return, so TT would not know that you had an issue with the IRS regarding your missing 1095A. Did the IRS send you a letter? How did you become aware that the 1095A was left out?
It is not clear from what you are telling us whether the return was ever processed by the IRS at all. Call the IRS and ask them what they want. We cannot tell from your narrative whether you just need to re-do the return and mail it or if you need to use a 1040X and actually amend.
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 3 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
Hope you can get this sorted out painlessly!
